The first 24 hours are the most critical period in the life of a newborn puppy or kitten. It is during this time that the mother produces colostrum, the rich “first milk”. Depending on when they were separated from the mother, orphans may not have had sufficient, if any, colostrum and their chances for survival are greatly reduced.
What is Colostrum?
The first breast milk produced after giving birth is known as colostrum. Scientific studies have shown that colostrum and nutrients derived from colostrum:
- Stimulate the normal growth, regeneration and repair of muscle, skin collagen, bone cartilage and nerve tissue.
- Improve vitality and athletic performance.
- Enhance the digestive system.
- Build lean body mass.
- Aid in infant survival.
