How to Measure a Dog for a Crate

What Size Crate Does My Dog Need?

Finding the right size crate for a dog is simple. To find the right size crate for your dog just follow these three simple steps:

  1. Have your dog stand up.
  2. Take your tape measure and measure the length of your dog from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. Now add four inches to that number. That is the ideal crate length for your dog.
  3. When your dog is still standing measure from the floor to the tip of his ears. Again, add four inches. That number is the ideal crate height.

Can a Dog Crate Be Too Big?

You want the dog to be able to stand up and turn around. If your dog is short, no worries. Extra headroom isn’t a problem. Your goal is a comfortable crate size, but not too big. Dogs are denning animals. If your dog has too much room he will be uncomfortable, and he will be more likely to have a potty accident in the cage.

What to Put in a Dog Crate

Before you put your dog inside the crate, it’s helpful to add a cage liner on the bottom of the crate. We find the Breeder’s Edge Repeat Crate Pads work well. Compared to a blanket, pillow or fluffy bed, dogs are less likely to shred a pad into a million pieces. Plus, the Repeat Crate Pads come in multiple sizes and they are washable so if your dog does have a potty accident, clean-up is a breeze.
